The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding new biohybrid and living material systems with the "MaterialVital" initiative. Research consortia from science, industry and society are invited to submit project outlines. The aim is to develop sustainable materials for health, safety and quality of life.
The "MaterialVital" initiative is part of the BMBF's Material Hub program and focuses on pioneering material developments with sustainable and functional properties. The focus is particularly on biohybrid and living materials that combine natural and artificial components and thus open up completely new application possibilities. These materials could be used, for example, in medicine for biocompatible implants, in environmental protection for biodegradable materials or in the construction industry for sustainable structures.
Funding is available for interdisciplinary collaborative projects that combine scientific research with practical development. Universities, non-university research institutions, companies and other stakeholders from science, industry and society can apply. The projects should develop innovative material solutions that take ecological and social aspects into account alongside technological advances. There is also a particular focus on sustainable production processes and the circular economy.
The funding covers the research, development and testing of new material systems. Project outlines must be submitted to the project management organization as a first step. Following a positive assessment, an invitation to submit an application for the second phase of funding will be issued.
The deadline for submitting project outlines is May 27, 2025.
