Germany is the largest producer of paper, cardboard and paperboard in Europe and is one of the four largest producer countries in the world. Annually, the German paper industry generates sales of around 14 billion euros, of which around 5.3 billion euros are generated by the paper industry and paper converting industry in Bavaria.
The industry has been shaped by structural changes in recent years. For example, the market for graphic papers is undergoing major upheaval; in 2015, they accounted for almost 70 percent of paper production in Bavaria. By contrast, the market for packaging and hygiene papers is growing.
In order to continue to successfully counter the structural change and remain competitive in the future, the industry wants to develop new technologies and future areas of application for the fiber-based material paper - also in combination with other materials such as film and textiles. The trend here is toward niche products with higher added value and smaller quantities. The prerequisites for this are given, because paper as a material has a wide range of properties: among other things, it is anisotropic, hygroscopic, deformable, viscoelastic, functionalizable and light. Paper thus has a wide range of potential applications in a wide variety of industries. To open up future fields of application - e.g. in lightweight construction, medical technology or the smart home - it is important to know the requirements of these markets. For this, not only cross-technology but also cross-industry networking plays an important role.
