Bavaria's Alpine region is not only a special source of inspiration for tourists. Innovative people and especially creative entrepreneurs find the free space there to implement their ideas.

On the peaks of the Schlierseer mountains reflect the sunlight. Down in the cool valley, the sun's rays tickle the noses of Christine Skowski and Erwin J. Franz. Their gaze wanders through the wintry landscape as the clatter of hooves and the snorting of the horses of a passing carriage break the silence.
A bar camp focusing on digitization is currently taking place at the historic Hasenöhrl-Hof in Bayrischzell as part of the creativeALPS Days 2018. Erwin J. Franz, who runs an advertising agency in Linz, has joined a panel dedicated to the topic of "coworking" - new German for "working where others go on vacation." Photographer Christine Skowskis' session will address the question, "How can a platform for crafts and creative work be created in rural areas?"
Creative entrepreneurs in focus
The second day of the creativeALPS days will take participants to, among other places, the "berg_kulturbüro" in neighboring Ramsau near Berchtesgaden, a think tank for alpine political and cultural issues and the headquarters of the creativeALPS initiative founded by Jens Badura. Its motto: rethinking the Alps - not only as a destination for tourists, but also as a living and economic space.
How this can work is what bayernkreativ and seven other partners want to find out at the creativeALPS days. Erwin J. Franz is particularly taken with the wood turner Franz Josef Keilhofer from Bischofswiesen, who is fully committed to wood as a material. His bowls, cans and cutting boards are characterized by simple elegance, timeless design and reduced forms.
Another stop is the interactive media forge Polycular in Hallein, south of Salzburg. Robert Praxmarer and his colleagues produce virtual and augmented reality applications, computer games and social apps there - for example, an app designed to encourage children to read.
Design symposium for creatives
The creativeALPS days will conclude with a design symposium at the famous handmade paper mill in Gmund am Tegernsee, where experts from South Tyrol and the Bregenzerwald will present how design and craftsmanship strengthen their region. In the afternoon, six workshops are on the agenda. Erwin J. Franz opts for "The Power of Analog. On the hand", which develops new ideas for Gmund paper, while Christine Skowski explores the question of what opportunities upcycling offers.
The workshop results clearly show: the Oberland needs a creative center and a design award. This is to be offered for the first time in 2019. Christine Skowski and Erwin J. Franz have been inspired by the Alpine region in many ways. When they leave, the two have networked intensively with other creatives and have many new ideas in their luggage.
