The use of batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries and rechargeable batteries, is increasing in various applications such as electromobility. Around 200,000 tons of used batteries are produced every year and this is expected to increase tenfold by 2050. The rapid development of battery systems leads to great variations in composition. Unfortunately, these used batteries from electronic devices and consumer goods have not yet been recovered and cannot be returned to the circular economy. The EU is demanding higher recycling rates, which, in addition to the variable composition, poses a challenge for the recycling industry. There is also a risk of fires when disposing of smaller lithium-ion batteries, e.g. from power tools, due to incorrect storage and a lack of hazard awareness.
