The European Commission has adopted a standardized measurement method to enable EU member states to collect information on microplastics in water more reliably. It has also adopted a delegated act on the safe reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation.
The harmonized, standardized methodology will help Member States to collect information on the presence of microplastics in their water supply chain. This will facilitate the comparison and interpretation of monitoring results. Currently, Member States use a variety of different methods. The Water Reuse Act sets out how national authorities should draw up plans to manage risks associated with the use of wastewater for irrigation. This includes, for example, methods for identifying hazards.
