Background
Since its creation in 1993, the Single Market has helped to make everyday life easier for people and businesses and to promote jobs and growth across the EU. It ensures the free movement of goods, services, capital and people in a single EU internal market. With 447 million European citizens and 23 million businesses, the EU single market is recognized as the largest single market in the world. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, this moment is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to face new challenges.
The single market is one of the European Union's greatest achievements and has strengthened the EU's position as a global economic player, with 15% of the world's trade in goods coming from the EU. EU citizens can study, live, shop, work and retire in any EU country - and at the same time choose from a wide range of products from all over Europe. Nevertheless, it is crucial to continuously improve the functioning of the single market, as it plays a crucial role in addressing Europe's current and future challenges. The EU single market protects people and businesses while making progress towards a fairer, more responsible and sustainable Europe. For example, a new law requires all cell phones, tablets and cameras sold in the European Union to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port by the end of 2024. This move is part of the EU's wider efforts to reduce e-waste and empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.
