The new EU Packaging Regulation came into force on February 11, 2025. It aims to help tackle the environmental problems caused by excessive packaging waste.
The regulation contains a series of measures aimed at strengthening the internal market for waste, promoting the development of reusable materials and recycling and reducing dependence on primary resources.
The main points of the new regulation are
- Promoting reuse and refilling: the regulation promotes the reuse and refilling of packaging as alternatives to single-use packaging.
- Better information for consumers: Consumers are to be better informed about the possibilities of reusing and recycling packaging.
- Restriction of hazardous substances: The regulation contains restrictions on certain hazardous substances in packaging in order to better protect health and the environment.
- Creation of new business opportunities: The regulation offers new business opportunities for companies developing innovative packaging solutions.
The European Commission will now focus on the implementation of the new regulation.
Most of the new requirements will apply from August 12, 2026.
