In a referendum, just under 70 percent of the population of Denklingen (Landsberg am Lech) favored the construction of a wind farm in the nearby forest. In 2014, it looked quite different.
With a majority of 69.5 percent, the citizens of the community of Denklingen (about 2,900 inhabitants) in the district of Landsberg am Lech voted on November 13 for the construction of up to six wind turbines. According to the question on the ballot paper, the construction of the turbines is conditional on the community and the population being able to participate in the wind farm "as part of an operator model." An area of around 420 hectares in the Sachsenrieder Forest to the west and southwest of Denklingen is earmarked for construction. The holding of the vote had decided the 14-member local council in September with majority.
Among the members of the body itself there are different views regarding the local wind power expansion. So there are fears regarding the water supply from the area. In 2014, the Denklingen population had rejected the construction of a wind farm with a majority of around 80 percent.
Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters) expressed his delight at the decision that has now been made. "The wind has turned. The majority of the population is now behind wind power projects," he said in a statement. A "modern wind turbine" generates enough electricity on balance to supply about 10,000 citizens and could "provide cheap electricity from home for many companies."
