German basic industries are preparing for the transformation to climate neutrality, supported by the reform of the European Emissions Trading Scheme, which sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Energy-intensive industry in particular must invest rapidly in climate-neutral energy and production processes to pursue this path, with speed and scale being key.
Current challenges such as supply bottlenecks due to the Corona pandemic, energy supply and energy price crises, and geopolitical tensions emphasize the need for resilient supply structures. The industry needs to move toward decarbonization not only quickly, but also resiliently. Efficient use of energy and raw materials is central to achieving independence and being able to respond flexibly.
Agora's study shows that the circular economy is a key strategy for energy-intensive industries to become resilient and carbon neutral. Recycling, improved material efficiency, substitution of raw materials and longer product use can make these value chains more sustainable. Innovations such as 3D printing, advanced recycling and innovative product design open up new circular economy business models for industry.
