On 25.04.2023, the revised funding guideline for climate adaptation measures in social institutions was published by the Federal Environment Ministry. The funding is aimed in particular at social institutions such as daycare centers, hospitals and retirement and nursing homes that care for vulnerable people and are therefore particularly affected by the impact of the climate crisis. The funding, which has already been running since 2020, was further developed and extended on the basis of a newly formulated funding guideline. From May 15, 2023, Träger*innen of social institutions can apply for funding for climate adaptation measures.

Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke: "The consequences of the climate crisis make especially vulnerable groups to create. Children, the elderly or sick people, for example, suffer particularly from long periods of heat. Social institutions assume a special responsibility when they take precautions, for example with shading and cooling as heat protection. The BMUV program is now entering the next round of funding: climate adaptation measures are being promoted in further social institutions. This time, the focus is on projects that promote climate adaptation and prevention, natural climate protection and the protection of nature together."

The funding of "Climate adaptation in social institutions" was launched in 2020 as part of the economic stimulus and future package to cope with the Corona crisis for a limited period from 2020 to 2023 with a volume of 150 million euros. The first and so far only funding window was characterized by unexpectedly high demand, with almost 600 applications received. As part of the immediate climate adaptation program, the BMUV has determined that funding to support social institutions will be made permanent and further developed after 2023. At the same time, the funding guideline is part of the National Climate Adaptation Program, which was relaunched to steer funding policy.

With the aim of providing transformative incentives in the health, care and social sectors towards precautionary adaptation to the consequences of the climate crisis, the existing funding guideline "Climate adaptation in social institutions" was realigned. Funding is provided for effective and exemplary model projects that are suitable for making social institutions climate-silient and encourage imitation. In this way, the widely required conversion of social institutions in Germany is to be oriented towards good examples and sustainable solutions.

The funding is aimed at non-profit or publicly organized social institutions and their sponsors. It is aimed at institutions whose activities are closely related to vulnerable groups of people. Projects should primarily have an impact in regions that are or will be affected by a particularly high number of climatic extremes or severe climatic changes (so-called climatic hotspots).

The next funding window will be open in the period from May 15, 2023 to August 15, 2023 inclusive. During this period, funding applications can be submitted to the project management organization Zukunft - Umwelt - Gesellschaft (ZUG).

Further information on funding and application procedures will be published on the website of the responsible project management organization Zukunft - Umwelt - Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH. A digital information event for applicants and interested parties will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023 from 9:00 to 11:00. Registration is open through the ZUG website until May 11, 2023.
