A supranational hydrogen network is to be established between Germany and Denmark. Energinet from Denmark and Gasunie Deutschland are looking for supporters for this.
The transmission system operators Energinet (Denmark) and Gasunie Deutschland (Hannover) are looking for dialogue with the future users of the Danish-German hydrogen network. They are asking interested market participants to support two hydrogen projects "as part of the European Commission's current consultation," Gasunie Deutschland announced.
The two companies have submitted two hydrogen pipeline projects to the EU Commission for Projects of Common Interest (PCI) status. Why? "This will result in priority access to EU funding as well as simplified permitting," it adds.
Energinet is working on a hydrogen transport network in Denmark that will connect green hydrogen production facilities in Jutland with Germany and a future cavern storage facility operated by Gas Storage Denmark. The "Danish backbone West" project, which has been registered with the EU as a PCI, is to comprise a hydrogen network around 360 kilometers long.
Gasunie is developing the "Hyperlink 3" project in Germany, which is also to be recognized as a PCI project. It is a 770-kilometer hydrogen network connecting major production sites with large industrial consumption centers, for example in chemical or steel production.
Both companies emphasize the importance of the projects. "It will not be easy to realize a project of this scale in a hydrogen market that is not yet mature," said Stine Grenaa Jensen, vice president of system development at Energinet. But she expects it to be feasible, though it will require "close cooperation between the market, authorities and grid operators."
The EU Commission's consultation for the PCI projects runs until March 16.
