A new platform for district heating providers aims to improve transparency for consumers when it comes to heating costs. It is set to launch in April.
The German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), the Association of Local Utilities (VKU) and the District Heating Working Group (AGFW) want to launch a joint platform for district heating providers in April. The platform is currently being set up, the VKU confirmed when asked by the editorial team. "Around 150 district heating companies will take part. This means we cover almost the entire market," said BDEW boss Kerstin Andreae in an interview with the news portal Table Media, according to the German Press Agency (dpa).
The aim of the platform is to increase price transparency in district heating, the VKU added in its response. In this way, the associations want to counter prejudices against district heating and increase acceptance of district heating. This is relevant for the upcoming expansion of district heating as well as for the heating transition, municipal heating planning and the 2045 climate neutrality target in general. "District heating can be a safe and cost-effective option for our future climate-neutral heat supply, depending on the local situation. The municipal utilities are ready to invest in the expansion," said a VKU spokesperson in response to an inquiry.
With the new offer, the associations are responding to criticism of the district heating prices, where there are large differences that are difficult for customers to understand.
The BDEW boss says she hopes that the new offer will also lead to lower costs for consumers. Unlike with electricity or gas, they cannot switch providers for district heating.
