The "H2vorOrt" initiative has opened the second planning phase of the Gas Grid Area Transformation Plan (GTP). Distribution network operators can participate until June 30.

Last year, with the help of the submitted GTP 2022, Germany's gas distribution network operators began planning an area-wide hydrogen network that would evolve from today's gas network. Now the initiatives and associations, in which the majority of the gas distribution network operators are united, want to intensify the dialog with industry and commercial customers as well as municipalities for the further development of the GTP. This is the result of a joint announcement by the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW), the Association of Municipal Companies (VKU) and the local H2 initiative.

The further development of the GTP and the planning work coordinated through it should ensure that the future supply of hydrogen also fits the local demand situation. Planning, he said, will initially take place on the part of the individual 180 participating gas distribution system operators and will then be consolidated in a Germany-wide report. The new report on the GTP is to be published in the fall of this year, the report continues.

As a guide, H2 vor Ort, DVGW and VKU provide network operators with a guideline on the basis of which they can continue their planning. The three organizations also recommend participation to distribution system operators who were not involved in the 2022 GTP planning process. Participation is possible until June 30. By way of background, Germany's gas distribution networks supply around 50 percent of all households with heat and over 1.8 million industrial and commercial customers with energy. The GTP is the "route planner for the transformation," as Gerald Linke, Chairman of the Board of DVGW, explains. The transformation to climate-neutral gases is considered a key element in achieving the energy transition by 2045. With 180 network operators participating in the first planning round, the majority of network connections and distribution network kilometers in Germany are already covered.

The guide to the 2023 GTP is available for download on the H2 website.
