The Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy has issued Airport Energie Management GmbH with a funding notice for the construction of a hydrogen filling station at Memmingen Airport.
This marks the start of the use of green hydrogen at Memmingen Airport as part of the "Green Airport Memmingen" project. The aim of this project is to operate the airport in a climate-neutral manner by 2030. Airport Energie Management GmbH was founded in 2017 to pursue this goal.

From the second quarter of 2025, up to 250 tons of green hydrogen will be supplied annually to buses, trucks and cars at the hydrogen filling station at Memmingen Airport. The airport's favorable location near the A7/A96 interchange makes it possible to supply residents from Memmingen's commercial areas and long-distance traffic on the A7 and A96 highways. This measure is expected to save up to 3,000 tons of CO2 annually compared to diesel-powered vehicles.

Detailed planning will begin as early as July 2023 in order to obtain fast-track approval, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2024. In the long term, the green hydrogen is to be produced at the site itself by electrolysis, using a photovoltaic project for renewable power generation around the airport as a basis. The waste heat from electrolysis can be fed into the existing district heating network. This initiative is part of the Bavarian Hydrogen Strategy and contributes to achieving climate protection and sustainability goals.
