The new state association "Erneuerbare Energien Bayern e.V. (LEE Bayern)" aims to promote the expansion of renewable energies in Germany's southernmost state.

Lack of land, bureaucracy, high lease prices for wind turbine sites, little courage and unnecessary debates - the list of reasons why the expansion of green energy is only making slow progress in Bavaria is long. LEE Bayern, which was founded at the beginning of May, now wants to change this.

The association says it is committed to a rapid and sustainable energy transition in Bavaria. As an umbrella organization, it unites the professional associations of all sectors in the field of renewable energies. The founding members include the Association of Hydropower Plants in Bavaria (VBW), the Biogas Association, the Bavarian State Association of the German Wind Energy Association (BWE), the northern German renewables project developer GP Joule, the Bavarian Solar Association, Renergie Allgäu and the Bavarian State Association of Hydropower Plants. Heinrich Gärtner was appointed Chairman of the Board. Gärtner is co-founder and CTO of GP Joule.

Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters), Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, welcomed the founding of the interest group. "The energy transition is teamwork," he was quoted as saying in a statement from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. He emphasized: "We must use the full potential available in Bavaria: Biogas, photovoltaics, wind power, hydrogen, hydropower and geothermal energy. We have congruent interests in many important issues such as the decentralized design of the energy transition, sector coupling and the future use of hydrogen. I am therefore looking forward to good cooperation with LEE Bayern."

Expert support for the transformation

The Minister also appointed LEE Bayern as a supporter of "Team Energiewende Bayern". This initiative was founded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2020. According to its own statement, it is committed to providing objective and trustworthy guidance on the energy transition. Projects, campaigns and participants in Team Energiewende Bayern are intended to motivate people to get involved. The participating companies provide a network of consultants to support the implementation of their own energy projects.

Gärtner commented on the founding of the association: "The task of the LEE is to provide expert support for the transformation process and the switch from a centralized to a decentralized energy supply." Proof that sustainable generation, storage and the flexibilization of consumption works has already been demonstrated in numerous projects. Now it is important to further publicize these positive examples and to set the right regulatory course for further expansion through cooperation with politicians.
