The market for solar power home storage is booming, but regionally, according to new figures from a provider, large differences are apparent.

The regional disparity does not reach the extent as with beer sales, but Bavaria - in 2022 about 2.4 of 8.8 billion liters nationwide - is clearly ahead in the state comparison. According to an evaluation by PV provider Zolar, the capacity of installed home storage in the Free State is now 106.2 kWh per 1,000 inhabitants. Baden-Württemberg ranks second with 89.9 kWh. Rhineland-Palatinate (82.9 kWh), Lower Saxony (82.0 kWh), Brandenburg (77.2 kWh) and North Rhine-Westphalia (61.4 kWh) follow close behind. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (42.5 kW) and the city-states of Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg appear at the bottom of the ranking, each with less than 15 kWh per 1,000 inhabitants.

Intotal, private households in Germany currently have a storage capacity of 6 million kWh, Zolar informs and refers to data from the Rheinisch-Westfälische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen. This corresponds to 79 percent of the capacity of all battery storage systems. Accordingly, the storage capacity in the industry currently reaches just 316,000 kWh.

"At Zolar alone, around 90 percent of customers opt for a storage unit when buying a solar system," Sarah Müller, Chief Commercial Officer of the Berlin-based company. The German Solar Industry Association (BSW) put the total number of home storage installations at 627,000 by the end of last year, with new storage capacity installed in 2022 at 2.48 million kWh, according to BSW estimates, of which home storage accounted for 1.85 million kWh.
