The company Sunfire GmbH wants to invest a good 255 million euros at the Dresden site and receives 162 million euros in funding from the state.
Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) and Saxony's Minister of Economics Martin Dulig (SPD) handed over the funding notice on October 30 in Dresden. The state of Saxony has a 30 percent share in the funding amount.
In Dresden, Sunfire plans to produce electrolyzers in two forms - alkali as well as high-temperature technology. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Sunfire is planning a production landscape for alkaline electrolysers, which will be funded with about 7 million euros from the federal government and the EU and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (30 percent). Electrolysers are technical devices that can be used to produce hydrogen from renewable electricity in large quantities.
"In the coming years, we want to build a high-performance hydrogen infrastructure. Sufficient electrolysers, with which the energy carrier can be produced in a climate-friendly way, are a basic prerequisite for this," Habeck said, according to a statement distributed in advance. In order to achieve the ambitious goals of the National Hydrogen Strategy, industrial and automated production capacities for electrolysers are needed. In addition, it is necessary to consolidate and expand the technological leadership of German companies in the production of electrolyzers.
According to Dulig, hydrogen as a new energy carrier is necessary for the ecological transformation of industry. "Earlier than others, Saxony has recognized this and joined forces. The Free State stands here at the side of the federal government and brings its innovative strength. We need imports just as much as local production."
