Until August 31, companies of any size can join the climate protection initiative if they pursue environmental protection or adaptation to the climate crisis as a corporate goal.

The Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWK), the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) and the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) call to join the "Excellence Initiative Climate Protection Companies". Companies of all sizes and from all sectors can take part. The application deadline is August 31, 2023. Jörg Schmidt, Chairman of Klimaschutz-Unternehmen e. V. explained, "We promote networking and exchange among companies in order to make further progress in climate protection."

The members are pioneers in their industry and motivate others to do the same. Companies of all sizes that pursue climate protection, environmental protection or adaptation to the climate crisis as a strategic corporate goal are part of the Excellence Initiative. With their best practices, the climate protection companies show in exemplary fashion how energy and resource efficiency can be implemented in the interests of climate protection.

Ministers seek pioneers

Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Robert Habeck (Greens) said, "We will only achieve the goal of a climate-neutral economy with strong, courageous and innovative companies that show: It can be done!" Investing in climate protection pays off and strengthens competitiveness, he added. Examples such as energy and resource efficiency, increased use of renewable energies and decarbonization of operations should also motivate others to do the same. "Therefore, join in and apply as a lighthouse company for climate protection!" said the minister.

"Without investments in ambitious climate protection and precautionary climate adaptation, we will still have to reckon with much higher costs in the coming decades," warned Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens). All the more important, she said, are companies that are leading the way and facing up to the challenges in a special way.

Climate protection as a competitive advantage

DIHK President Peter Adrian praised: "Climate protection has become an integral part of everyday business life for the breadth of the economy." Unfortunately, he said, the burden of high energy prices has also meant that spending on corporate climate protection has had to be put on hold. Investments in corporate climate protection, however, are investments in competitiveness and thus in the future of one's own company. "I can therefore only advise companies to become part of this successful network," Adrian said.

The application process starts with an online-based check that provides a quick orientation on the application prospects. At the end of the process, the advisory board, an independent panel of experts, decides on acceptance. Successful applicants are admitted to the association at a public event and honored with a certificate from the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the German Federal Ministry of the Environment and the DIHK.

The application procedure to become a climate protection company is available on the Internet.
