Cities and associations can now submit innovative project proposals to the European Urban Initiative. The corresponding call for proposals worth 120 million euros have been published.
It is looking for innovative projects that focus on testing new solutions to current challenges in urban areas. These include projects in the area of greener cities, sustainable tourism and talent development in shrinking cities.
Projects must focus on one of the following three themes:
- Environmentally Friendlier Cities - testing and delivering concrete innovative solutions for green and blue infrastructure across European cities to better address biodiversity, pollution, resource and climate challenges;
- sustainable tourism - long-term green and digital transformation, resilience and sustainability of the tourism ecosystem through diversification of tourism products, achieving positive impacts on local communities and environment, promoting social inclusion and innovation, creating new governance models and improving linkages with smaller surrounding areas and cities, creating more opportunities for the whole region;
- talent development in shrinking cities - area-based and integrated pilot projects to test new solutions for retaining and attracting talent, i. e. i.e. engaging local communities and addressing the economic, social and environmental dimensions caused by population decline.
80 percent of the cost of selected projects will be financed by the European Regional Development Fund. Each project can receive up to 5 million euros. Part of this funding will be used to transfer innovative solutions to other cities in Europe to achieve an even greater impact - especially in cities and regions facing particular difficulties in transitioning to a green future. In the longer term, the supported city authorities will enter into transfer partnerships with three other cities interested in implementing projects in part or in full in their own cities as well.
