The prices for heating, electricity and mobility have fallen slightly again in January 2023, but remain at a high level.

The annual energy costs for a sample household were on average 6,270 euros in January. This is about 13 percent less than in the previous month. Compared to January 2022 (6,092 euros) consumers*innen had to pay three percent more, however, despite price brakes.

Compared to December 2022, the prices for heating have fallen by 22 percent. In December 2022 the sample household had to spend on the average for gas and fuel oil still 3,280 euro, up-to-date are it 2,561 euro. A year ago, the average cost was 2,473 euros. The exchange price for gas (European Gas Spot Index THE) fell on a monthly average in January. In wholesale, the average price paid was 65 euros/MWh. In December 2022, the stock exchange gas price was still at an average of 117 euros/MWh (-44 percent).

"An alternative tariff for gas currently costs on average 283 euros less per year than the local basic supply - and that is in addition to the relief provided by the gas price brake," explained Steffen Suttner, Managing Director Energy at Check 24.

The cost of electricity in January 2023 averaged 2,297 euros, just under 2 percent below the previous month (2,334 euros). However, this is still 8 percent more than in January 2022 with 2,130 euros. The exchange electricity price fell significantly in January 2023 compared with the previous month. In December 2022, a MWh cost 244 euros; in January 2023, it was 116 euros - a drop of 52 percent from the previous month. Here, too, says Suttner, it is worth considering a change in tariff. There are more and more new customer tariffs below 40 cents/kWh.
