The southern Bavarian citizens' energy cooperative Egis has officially commissioned a district heating system in Bundorf in northern Bavaria.

After several intermediate steps and interim openings, the district heating supply in Bundorf in northern Bavaria has now finally been completed. It was officially put into operation on May 2. Construction began more than a year ago. "The district heating network has been in trial operation since the end of 2023 and is now fully operational thanks to the integration of the air heat pumps," announced the Egis citizens' energy cooperative in southern Bavaria.

The concept in the community of 900 inhabitants in Lower Franconia envisages generating the base heat load using a 200 kW heat pump and a 400 kW electric boiler. A 75,000 liter hot water buffer is also installed. A 200 kW wood chip boiler is used to cover peaks in winter. The network currently has a length of 1.6 kilometers. More than 20 private households and the municipality's public properties, such as the town hall, community center and kindergarten, are connected.

The electricity for the system is supplied by part of the 125 MW photovoltaic park that Egis commissioned with its project partner Maxsolar in September 2023. The energy cooperative uses 1.5 MW of this for the district heating supply. The electricity is supplied to the heating center on the outskirts of Bundorf via a direct power line.

Citizen-owned district heating system

The entire district heating system in Bundorf is owned by citizens and, according to the cooperative, will remain so. Around 30 percent of the 125 MW project is also owned by the citizens' energy cooperative.

"Residents and all interested parties can participate in the solar park and district heating system through our cooperative. Our members in turn benefit from the proceeds of the renewable energy systems," says Egis CEO Pascal Lang. The participation model has contributed to the great acceptance of the projects in Bundorf.

The Egis eG

The Inn-Salzach Energy Cooperative, Egis for short, based in Neuötting in southern Bavaria, is an association of citizens, municipalities and institutions with the aim of driving forward the energy transition in Germany through civic engagement. The cooperative was founded in 2013 and now has 2,400 members, according to its own information. These "mainly come from our home district of Altötting in Bavaria, but also from many other parts of Germany."
