The EU Innovation Fund is once again open for proposals for major projects that develop industrial solutions for decarbonizing Europe. Thanks to higher revenues from the auctioning of allowances under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, 3 billion euros are available for this year's round of awards. This is twice as much as originally planned. In line with the priorities of the REPowerEU plan projects that end the EU's dependence on fossil fuels from Russia are to be funded.
Specifically, the call for proposals seeks projects covering the following topics:
General decarbonization (1 billion euros): To support innovative projects in the fields of renewable energy, energy-intensive industries, energy storage or CO2 capture, use and storage, and products that replace CO2-intensive products (in particular low-carbon fuels, including for maritime and air transport);
Innovative electrification in industry and hydrogen (1 billion euros): To support innovative projects to replace fossil fuels in industry, as well as the production of renewable hydrogen or the use of hydrogen in industry;
Clean Technology in Manufacturing (0.7 billion euros) for innovative projects in the areas of manufacturing components as well as final equipment for electrolyzers and fuel cells, renewable energy, energy storage and heat pumps;
Medium-scale pilot projects (0.3 billion euros) for highly innovative projects in the field of disruptive or breakthrough technologies for deep decarbonization in all eligible sectors of the fund.
The call for proposals is open until March 16, 2023 for projects in EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. Project applications can be submitted via the EU Grants and Calls Portal , where information on the entire process is available. Applicants will be informed of the results of the evaluation in the second quarter of 2023. Grants and project signatures will take place in the fourth quarter of 2023.
