Since January 1, 2024, the CO2 price has risen to 45 euros per tonne, compared to 30 euros in the previous year.
By 2025, this is even set to increase to 55 euros. This measure will primarily affect heating and refueling costs with fossil fuels, which will therefore become more expensive every year. From 2026, prices will no longer be fixed but will be determined via flexible auctions, with a price corridor of 55 to 65 euros per tonne. The introduction of a European emissions trading system for CO2 emissions from transport and heating in buildings is planned by 2027. Forecasts assume that the price of CO2 will increase 2 to 3-fold by 2030. The levy applies to climate-damaging fuels such as diesel, petrol, natural gas or heating oil in order to create incentives for climate-friendly alternatives such as wood, solar thermal energy or electric cars.
