In autumn 2020, the Freilassing Energy Association was awarded the Bavarian Energy Prize of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs in the category "Energy production - electricity, heat".

The presentation of the certificate by Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger in Munich was unfortunately not possible at that time because of the pandemic-related restrictions. Prof. Dr. Oliver Mayer, Head of Energy and Energy Technology Cluster at "Bayern Innovativ", visited now  Freilassing, to see the energy center in operation and to exchange views on current topics on energy supply. With in the luggage: The prize money at a value of 2000 € and the official document of the honor, which could be presented thereby officially to mayor Markus Hiebl and energy group operation manager Rainer Wagner.

The energy group Freilassing supplies the sport and leisure plant Badylon, the primary and middle school, the urban purification plant as well as the youth club house with district heating on a line length of altogether 936 meters. The new building of the building yard and the public utility company will also be connected to the energy network from 2024.

The supply is provided by combined heat and power plants, which are supplied with sewage gas from the sewage treatment plant and operated with natural gas as a second fuel. This is supplemented by a biomass boiler that can also utilize municipal green waste. Parallel to the heating network, an electricity network was set up between the municipal buildings mentioned above. Electricity is supplied by several photovoltaic systems and by the combined heat and power plants in the sewage treatment plant and the heating center. From the point of view of energy law, the buildings distributed over the city area form a separate area that is completely self-sufficient in heat and to a large extent self-sufficient in electricity.
