Although the yield is higher in the south, mini solar plants are often installed in the north of the republic. For home storage, Bavaria leads the state ranking.
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony, the most balcony power plants per household are installed. This is shown by figures from the Agency for Renewable Energy (AEE). If, on the other hand, the installed capacity per federal state is used, the largest federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria are at the top.
61,400 mini-solar systems with a capacity of 44.39 MW were installed in German households at the end of 2022. "These systems are also called balcony power plants because they usually consist of only two modules that can be easily installed on the balcony parapet," AEE further announced. Since 2023, they are exempt from VAT nationwide. Not only homeowners, but also tenants can use them.
The front-runner in terms of installed small PV power plants is North Rhine-Westphalia, with 14,030 systems and 10,310 kW of power, followed by Bavaria with 8,970 systems (6,340 kW) and Lower Saxony with 7,710 mini solar power plants (5,650 kW). This means that "half of all balcony power plants Germany-wide are installed in these three federal states alone," according to AEE.
But if you look at the absolute numbers per household, the picture is different. Here Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is in first place in the state comparison with 2.7 plants per 1,000 households. Lower Saxony follows in second place with a value of 2.0. Schleswig-Holstein shares third place with Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate with 1.7 systems per 1,000 households.
The good performance of mini solar systems in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein can also be attributed to the funding policies in the states. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania promotes balcony power plants with a grant of up to 500 euros. In Schleswig-Holstein, there are funds of up to 200 euros. Additionally there are in Berlin - however only for tenants - and in Saxonia promotion funds of the respective country.
But not only balcony power plants are in vogue, also the associated battery storage for home use are in trend:
- Bavaria leads in this area with nearly 130,000 installed battery storage systems, according to AEE.
- In second place comes North Rhine-Westphalia with 98.000
- and then Baden-Württemberg with 95,000 units.
In 2022, Bavaria also recorded the largest expansion of storage capacity with 378,000 kWh. In second and third place were North Rhine-Westphalia with 341,000 kWh and Lower Saxony with 206,000 kWh.
