The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has launched a new research program for the energy transition. Projects can now apply in five subject areas.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) published the eighth energy research program on 3 June. The ministry is looking for innovative project ideas for research and development work that support the achievement of climate targets and the successful implementation of the energy transition. Applications are possible in five "missions" for greater energy efficiency and the generation and integration of renewable energies into the energy system.

The aim is for Germany to be climate-neutral by 2045 and at the same time ensure economic efficiency and security of energy supply. Companies, research institutes, universities and other institutions can now apply for funding to achieve this. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck (Greens) explained: "In view of the urgent need for action, research results and their rapid transfer to the market are becoming increasingly relevant in energy policy."

With the new funding announcement, his department is therefore providing incentives in the area of research and development to develop technologies for the successful conversion of the energy system. These could include energy-efficient insulation materials for residential buildings, electrolysis plants for green hydrogen or AI-based control tools for electricity demand, according to the Minister.

The cross-sector and cross-disciplinary research funding is geared towards five missions:

-    resilient and efficient energy system

-    climate-neutral heating and cooling supply

-    conversion of the electricity supply to renewable energies

-    sustainable hydrogen economy

-    rapid transfer of research results into practice
