Bayernwerk has put the 500,000th LED street light into operation in Freilassing,
Bayernwerk Netz GmbH operates street lighting in around 1,200 municipalities in Bavaria, making it the number one in Germany according to its own figures. Another milestone has now been reached in the campaign to convert to sustainable LED technology: the 500,000th Bayernwerk LED light has gone into operation in Freilassing in Upper Bavaria. This means that the conversion of the 660,000 lights operated by the company in total is on the home straight.
On the occasion of the anniversary that the utility was able to celebrate in his town, Freilassing's mayor Markus Hiebl said: "Modern and energy-efficient street lighting is not just a question of cost savings, but above all a question of our responsibility towards the environment." In the municipality, a total of 2050 street lights were previously retrofitted.
Bayernwerk CEO Egon Leo Westphal: "We have now achieved an LED rate of around 75 percent in street lighting. This puts us well above the national average of around 40 percent. This also shows that we in Bavaria are putting our sustainability strategy into practice with particular vigor." In this context, Westphal also paid particular tribute to the municipalities: "We are seeing a great deal of momentum there to shape the future of energy locally."
The aim, according to Westphal, is to convert almost all partner municipalities to this efficient and safe technology by 2026. "Then 99 percent of our 660,000 lighting points will be operated with LEDs."
Compared to the previous street lighting operation without the use of LEDs, Bayernwerk has been able to save almost 650 million kWh of electricity with the conversions to date, according to a company press release. The remaining potential is 50 million kWh.
In addition, the LED lights are generally operated with an independent night-time dimming function, which saves even more electricity. There are also digitally controllable lights, insect-friendly versions and those that adapt to weather and visibility conditions. Bayernwerk is currently testing hybrid models that can be operated both via the power grid and with solar power.
