Battery storage facilities are also becoming increasingly interesting for investors: Reichmuth Infrastructure is now realizing a large-scale storage project in Arzberg, Franconia.
The permit has been granted and construction is about to begin: one of Germany's largest battery storage power plants to date is to be built in Arzberg, Bavaria. This is according to a statement from Reichmuth Infrastructure. Together with co-investors MW Storage Fund, Bayernwerk and ZENOB, the infrastructure asset manager plans to build the 100 MW plant on the edge of the Fichtelgebirge mountains not far from the Czech border.
The storage facility with a capacity of 200,000 kWh is set to go into operation at the beginning of 2025. MW Storage is acting as the project developer and will also be responsible for setting up and operating the plant. The battery systems are to be supplied by Fluence Energy. Christian Ilgner, Head of Energy at Reichmuth Infrastructure, sees a great need for such storage systems in Germany in view of the rapidly increasing expansion of renewables: "The plant in Arzberg is therefore another logical project for us to finance the European energy transition, which also represents a promising opportunity with attractive revenue models for our investors."
For investors, battery storage systems are interesting because they can generate cash flows from two income streams, among other things. One of these is the provision and marketing of reserve capacity to grid operators in order to compensate for fluctuations in electricity grid frequency. A second and still relatively new source of income is intraday trading. Operators of battery storage systems buy electricity when it is cheap and sell it when prices rise with demand.
The plant is already the second infrastructure project that Reichmuth has realized in the region: In April 2023, the investor also commissioned the Fuchsstadt wind farm in Franconia (we reported).
