A state funding mechanism is needed to support the construction of hydrogen storage facilities. A new study by Frontier Economics on behalf of BDEW has examined eight possible instruments to promote or finance the ramp-up of hydrogen storage.
"In the future, hydrogen storage can make a significant contribution to harmonizing energy generation and consumption in the event of both short-term and seasonal fluctuations, ensuring grid stability and contributing to security of supply," says Kerstin Andreae, Chairwoman of the BDEW Executive Board.
A new study commissioned by BDEW has examined possible instruments for promoting and financing the ramp-up of hydrogen storage. The most important finding: in addition to the financing mechanism, the regulatory regime and the requirements for hydrogen quality must also be defined in a binding manner. This is the only way to reduce uncertainty for hydrogen storage operators and encourage them to invest. The holistic hydrogen storage strategy announced by the BMWK is therefore of particular importance.
