Vertical Farming - the new niche in food production?

April 24, 2023

Vertical farming is an innovative concept that is currently revolutionizing agricultural production in urban or climatically disadvantaged areas.

The concept allows crops to be produced in multiple layers on top of each other in a controlled environment, maximizing agricultural production in a confined space. By using technologies such as LED lighting, smart irrigation systems and automated processes, higher productivity can be achieved without wasting valuable resources such as water and land.

In the cross-cluster project WECLA, the New Materials Cluster, the Nutrition Cluster, the Bavarian Chemistry Cluster, the Additive Manufacturing Coordination Office and the Digital Agriculture Bavaria Competence Network have prepared information on future fields of technology in order to highlight backgrounds and potential applications.

The project aims to promote cooperation between different industries and provide impetus for future technologies.

Alternative technological approaches for materials, food, chemistry, agriculture and additive manufacturing.

In the multimedia story of our cross-cluster project WECLA we have taken up the topic of Vertical Farming. Here, we explain in a simple and understandable way how vertical farming works, which systems are available and who is already working on this topic.
