SiC recycling with RECOSiC

06/16/2023

Silicon carbide - a sought-after industrial material for many applications. Due to the heat resistance and extreme hardness of the material, it is used for example for refractory components as well as in the semiconductor industry.

However, apart from producing large amounts of by-products and waste products, its production is extremely energy-intensive and leads to high carbon dioxide emissions.

To address this problem, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technology and Systems IKTS have developed RECOSiC©, an extremely environmentally friendly recycling process, which allows the by- and waste products to be converted into high-quality silicon carbide. This new process reduces dependence on raw material suppliers and improves yields.
