TUM wins at the Autonomous Challenge in Las Vegas

01/11/2022

At the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas at the beginning of January 2022, the team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) achieved second place at the Autonomous Challenge@CES and will receive prize money of $50,000.

The "TUM Autonomous Motorsport" team entered the race as defending champions and engaged in an exciting race with four other university teams, ultimately achieving second place. The race car, controlled by artificial intelligence, achieved top speeds of up to 270 km/h. Professor Markus Lienkamp, holder of the Chair of Automotive Engineering, is delighted with his team's success: "In this race, we were able to show what our autonomous vehicle can do in interaction with other vehicles at such extremely high speeds. We have never driven as fast as we did today. I am very proud of our placing. But what really counts is the progress we were able to make here today. This is a victory for autonomous racing as a whole." With sometimes spectacular overtaking maneuvers, "TUM Autonomous Motorsport"  has been increasing the speed more and more in order to deliberately test limits. Now it will be analyzed in more detail what and when the vehicle finally reached its limit

Long-time partner at CoFAT

The Automotive Cluster has a long-standing partnership with the Chair of Automotive Engineering headed by Professor Lienkamp through the joint annual hosting of the Conference on Future Automotive Technology (CoFAT). Due to a pandemic, the conference, which normally takes place in Fürstenfeldbruck, had to be cancelled in May 2020 and could only be held as a virtual event last year as well. Preparations are already underway so that CoFAT can hopefully take place again this year in the usual format.

We congratulate the dedicated team "TUM Autonomous Motorsport" on its successful placement at the Autonomous Challenge@CES and look forward to continued intensive cooperation.
