The contribution of renewables has grown most recently (2021) only in heating and cooling, but has declined in electricity and transport.

In the electricity sector, renewables accounted for 41.1 percent of Germany's gross electricity consumption. This is a significant drop compared to the previous year (2020: 45.2 percent), which is primarily due to the low-wind weather conditions, but also to increased electricity consumption.
Renewable energies were able to contribute a total of 16.5 percent to final energy consumption in the heating and cooling sector (2020: 15.2 percent). The growth was mainly due to increased sales of wood (pellets, logs) and the increasing installation of heat pumps.
In the transport sector, however, renewables contributed only 6.8 percent to final energy consumption. Here, lower sales of biodiesel, a lower share of electricity from renewables and higher energy consumption compared to the Corona year 2020 made themselves felt.
