Together with Bayern Innovativ GmbH, the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen established the network "k-messwerk - die mess- und labortechnische Plattform Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen" in 2010 in order to further expand cooperation between the key players in the regional plastics industry. The network was initially funded over a period of three years as part of the ZIM-NEMO program of the Federal Ministry of Economics. Since 2013, the companies have been members of the New Materials Cluster, which has been responsible for network management ever since.

The cooperation now focuses on plastics-related and other topics that are important for industry and research, including measurement and laboratory technology, sustainability and the circular economy, digitalization and industrial advancements (Industry 4.0). K-messwerk comprises small, medium-sized and large companies as well as two educational institutions. The plastics processing value chain is fully represented - from plastics production to machine and tool construction and processing (injection molding, extrusion, surface finishing, etc.) to plastics recycling.
