The European Commission welcomes the agreement by G7 leaders on international guiding principles for artificial intelligence (AI) and a voluntary code of conduct for AI developers.

With the aim of ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of the technology, G7 leaders and the EU have adopted eleven guiding principles. These include guidelines for organizations that develop, deploy and use advanced AI systems such as basic models and large-scale AI to promote the safety and trustworthiness of the technology. They include:

  • commitments to mitigate risk and misuse and identify vulnerabilities,
  • promoting responsible information sharing,
  • reporting security incidents,
  • investing in cybersecurity, and
  • a labeling system that enables users to recognize AI-generated content.

Based on the results of a stakeholder consultation, these principles were developed by the EU together with the other G7 members as part of the Hiroshima process. The guiding principles in turn served as the basis for the creation of a code of conduct. It will provide detailed and practical guidance to organizations developing AI. The voluntary Code of Conduct will also promote responsible AI governance worldwide. Both documents will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
