Profile

The Fraunhofer IGB develops processes, technologies and products for health, sustainable chemistry and the environment. In doing so, we rely on the combination of biological and process engineering competencies to contribute to human well-being, a sustainable economy and an intact environment with the systems approach of the bioeconomy and bioinspired, biointegrated and biointelligent solutions.

In close cooperation with partners from academia and industry, the IGB covers the entire innovation chain from basic research to industrial implementation. We offer our customers research services from feasibility studies to application-ready development, complemented by a wide range of analysis and testing services. Complete solutions from laboratory to pilot scale are among the strengths of the institute.

Research focuses include nucleic acid-based diagnostics, virus-based technologies, 3D tissue models, functional algal ingredients, water and wastewater technologies, membranes, catalysts, and regenerative resources, industrial biotechnology, sustainable syntheses, biobased chemicals, and functional materials. With this thematic focus, the Institute has for many years been actively addressing challenges of sustainable and patient-tailored healthcare, a sustainable bioeconomy and climate-neutral as well as resource-efficient circular economy. In doing so, we also link industrial value creation and environmental protection as a solution for sustainable economic activity with integrated approaches for water, agriculture, energy and chemistry.
